What the Internet of Things Can Do for Businesses in 2025

The new year is generally associated with fresh starts and new opportunities. One opportunity that will continue to demonstrate and expand upon what it can do for businesses is the Internet of Things, also known as the IoT.

Let’s take a few moments to break down what the IoT is and—more importantly—what it can help you and your organization accomplish throughout 2025 and beyond.

What is the Internet of Things?

Many modern devices now incorporate the Internet into their operations, adding a litany of unconventional devices to those that would traditionally communicate with each other. No longer are computers, servers, and other IT infrastructure components the only pieces of smart technology that businesses must contend with… now there are many other devices to consider.

20 billion more, actually, compared to the (relatively) scant few million we saw two decades ago.

The development and growth of this burgeoning branch of technology should make it clear that it is not going anywhere anytime soon, so it pays to keep close attention to what is going on in the coming months.

What Counts as a “Thing?”

The list of devices that are now part of the IoT is immensely extensive and, as we’ve established, still growing all the time. From smart lights to temperature sensors and almost everything in between, the IoT is defined as any typically mundane device that connects to and exchanges data with others via the Internet. Chances are you probably have one such device in reach or on your person, and if not, you almost certainly have one in view.

What Does 2025 Have in Store?

The Internet of Things has added even more utility to both the Internet and the technology we all rely on, bridging the gap between the two and allowing us all to enjoy greater convenience and elevated features this combination brings. This means that people are highly invested in what the IoT will bring in the near future. Many experts have posited a few predictions, including:

The IoT will generate nearly 80 zettabytes of data.
To put this obscenely large number into context, this equals 80,000,000,000,000 gigabytes.

The IoT will be empowered by the spread of 5G connectivity.
5G connections are anticipated to continue their rapid growth, and as it does so, IoT-enabled devices will be better able to access the resources they rely on.

IoT markets will continue growing.
The Industrial Internet of Things (or IIoT) market will increase to $920 billion per year, while the IoT market will see more than $1.5 trillion per year.

With all this, smart cities will rise, routers will be improved to support the increased workload, and governments will be urged to act in response. Productivity should improve, the supply chain will become easier to manage, data will be more accessible to those who need it and more secure against those who shouldn’t have it, and remote working capabilities will only rise.

In Short, 2025 Will Be Another Step Forward for Business IT Thanks to the IoT
